How to brew authentic Turkish coffee: Turkish Coffee Preparation Recipe

Updated: Apr 15

If you're new to Tasseography and how coffee readings work, you might be confused if you're using the right coffee and tools for the best results. To help you get started, I've included some of my personal favorite tools and coffee selection. If you think the traditional preparation of Turkish coffee is too complicated you may want to choose one of the Turkish coffee makers.

To prepare Turkish coffee, you will need the following items:

  1. Turkish coffee pot (cezve): This is a small copper or brass pot with a long handle that is used to prepare the coffee. You can also select one of the colorful hand decorated cezve's if you prefer.

  2. Turkish coffee: This coffee is finely ground and should be of high quality. You can usually find it at Middle Eastern or Turkish markets or use my personal favorites recommendations. If you enjoy the flavor of cardamom you can buy a coffee with with cardamom.

  3. Water: You will need fresh, cold water.

  4. Cubs of Sugar (optional): If you prefer your coffee sweet, you can add sugar to taste.

  5. Stainless Steel Fine Mesh Strainer in case you have to use other than Turkish coffee.

  6. Coffee spoon with a long handle to stir the coffee while brewing

  7. Oven mitts to hold the cezve (coffee pot), while your coffee is brewing

  8. Coffee cup with a wide opening, round bottom and no incrustations inside

Once you have these items, you can begin preparing your Turkish coffee by adding one tablespoon of coffee and one teaspoon of sugar (if desired) to the cezve for each cup of coffee you want to make. Then, add cold water to the cezve, stirring until the coffee and sugar are dissolved. Place the cezve on a low heat and wait for the coffee to heat up and the foam to form. Once the foam has formed and raises up to the top of the cezve, remove the cezve from the heat and wait for the foam to settle, than put again on the heat and repeat a couple of times. Repeat this process a few times until the coffee is heated through and the foam is thick and creamy. Pour the coffee into the cup and serve immediately. If your coffee is not finely grinded, use the strainer to pore in the cup otherwise you will have an extra thick muddy sediment at the bottom of the cup, which will make it harder to form figures and read your cup. Sit back, relax and indulge on the aroma and the unique Turkish coffee flavors. I hope that this Turkish Coffee preparation recipe is just what you needed to spice up your day.
